For the most part the songs on my debut record, Braw Power were written in Foshan, China whilst I was living out there between 2011 and 2014. They spent their infancy across the sea confined to a Tascam 4-track, courtesy of a cheap steel-string acoustic and a melodika. They’re now all grown-up, all singing and all dancing, and have fled the nest.
It's fun to look back at naked baby photos though isn't it? All of these 4-Track demos were recorded during my time in China aside from Skinny White Ghost, that was recorded on my return to the UK in Bridgeton, Glasgow 2014. Some songs changed quite drastically between this stage and the final recordings, 'Silver Wings' has an entirely different lyric for example. On the whole though, I think the final recordings are quite faithful to these original demos. See what you think!
The album cover here is one of the original unfinished mock-ups that Liam showed me when we were just getting the Yip Man comic-book concept together. We didn't plump for this 'night' version on the final sleeve but we did use elements of it on the vinyl labels and the inner-side of the CD sleeve. I've always liked the Batman inspired Yip-signal.
Anyways, if you do download this collection I hope you enjoy it for what it is. A sneak peak into the writing process I s'ppose. Most of these songs would have been demo'd the day/week they were writtten so it really is the first seeds of Braw you're hearing here, the Power came later of course!
