The songs on my third long-player, ’Cock of the North’ were mostly written between Summer 2015 and Springtime 2018 whilst living in Dumfries, Scotland. 'What's Your Secret?', is a bit older having been written and demo’d in Bridgeton, Glasgow in 2014. Also, if I’m being totally accurate (like anyone gives a fudge) 'Magic Potion' has been hanging around since way back in the Le Reno Amps days and the verse melodies - and lyric for the first verse - was written by Scott Maple.
Like I did with 'Braw Powered Down' and 'Pure Rough, Ken?', 'A Northern Cock' compiles all the demos that would later be fleshed out into the massive critical and commercial success story that is my third album, 'Cock of the North'.
Although it took awhile to release Cock of the North, the album was recorded at the same time as the second record, 'Pure Zen, Ken?'. At some point it dawned on me that we had a lot of songs that were really sounding great and that we might have a double album on our hands. I soon sacked the 'double album' idea and started considering that we had two records on the go. As most songs were nearing completion we tacked another weekend studio session on and tracked all the instrumentation for new songs, 'Bullshit Detector', 'Spiritual Bypass', 'Evil Doppelganger' and 'Dangling Carrots'. Once I had decided to call the record 'Cock of the North' I re-wrote 'This Isn't My Day Job' as the title track with a new lyric.
So there you have it, most of these 4-Track demos were knocked together and sent to the band prior to rehearsals. They were never intended for public consumption, so apologies for the varying quality, peaking, muffly bits and general shambolics.
